Surgical Technologies at UPMC in Central Pa.

Every day, the surgeons at UPMC in Central Pa. perform surgical procedures that make a difference in the lives of people just like you. With your health and safety in mind, we employ the most advanced technology to give you the best possible outcomes.

Types of Surgical Technologies

da Vinci® Surgical Systems

Having pioneered robotic surgery in Central Pennsylvania, we offer the most advanced robotic surgery on the latest da Vinci® Surgical Systems.

Olympus Integrated Systems

Our surgical suites feature this advanced imaging system that assists surgeons in performing laparoscopic surgery in a broad range of specialties. It not only improves efficiency and enhances diagnostic capabilities but also allows real-time collaboration among physicians and specialists in other areas of the hospital.

StealthStation® Surgical Navigation System

Our surgical suites include StealthStation navigation. This advanced tracking technology helps our surgeons precisely follow the movements of their micro-instruments in real time, allowing them to adjust if there are changes in the body during surgery. For orthopaedic and neurological procedures, this pinpoint accuracy further minimizes invasiveness and improves patient outcomes.

Fusion ENT Navigation System

This system, which features an electromagnetic image-guided tool, allows our surgeons to see the location of their instruments inside the sinus and perform precise movements with minimal impact and greater success.

High-definition Scopes And Monitors

We use high-definition light scopes and monitors, which allow our surgeons to get the clearest and most detailed view possible during procedures.

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)

UPMC physicians use endoscopic ultrasound to diagnose and stage colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, esophageal and bile duct cancers. The ultrasound waves produce images of internal structures, such as the digestive tract, as well as surrounding tissues and organs.

Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)

Endobronchial ultrasound is used in the diagnosis of lung cancer, infections and other diseases that cause enlarged lymph nodes in the chest. It allows physicians to perform a technique known as transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) to obtain tissue or fluid samples from the lungs and surrounding lymph nodes without conventional surgery.

Firefly Fluorescence Imaging

Firefly lighting helps surgeons remove tumors using wavelengths of light not visible to the human eye. A special dye is injected that causes a bright green fluorescence in certain tissues. The glow lets surgeons clearly see the difference between cancerous and healthy tissue when performing surgery, allowing them to remove the tumor while saving the rest of the healthy organ.
