Although having a baby is an exciting event, the staff at UPMC Magee-Womens in Central Pa. understand that you may be experiencing other emotions, such as nervousness or anxiety. Planning ahead for your baby's delivery will give you peace of mind and may help reduce some of your anxiety about becoming a mother.

We encourage you to think about your labor and delivery and develop a birth plan prior to your due date. Our caring staff will make every effort to adhere to your wishes and create the customized birthing experience you deserve.

Developing a birth plan will help you make some important decisions in advance, including:

Who will be present during your delivery
Who will be allowed to visit
What type of pain relief, if any, you would like to receive
Which physician will care for your newborn
Whether you will breastfeed or formula feed
Whether you will circumcise your son

Choosing a Health Care Provider

If you are pregnant, you should see your physician or midwife at least once a month for the first 36 weeks of your pregnancy. As your delivery date approaches, you should see your physician or midwife weekly.

Because your relationship with your health care provider is an important one, you should choose a physician or midwife who shares your philosophies about pregnancy and childbirth and has the specific training and qualifications to meet your needs.

Many women select an obstetrician/gynecologist physician who delivers babies and treats diseases of the female reproductive organs to provide their care. There are other options, however, including, midwives.

Choosing a Pediatrician

Before your baby is born, it is a good idea to choose a health care provider for him or her, either a pediatrician, pediatric nurse practitioner or a family practice provider. When choosing your baby's health care provider, you will want to consider:

Whether the provider accepts your insurance
Whether the provider is accepting new patients
Whether the practice's policies, hours and procedures meet your needs

Your baby's provider will usually visit you in the hospital for your baby's first checkup. If your chosen provider does not perform newborn exams at UPMC, our staff will provide you with a referral.
