Using the most advanced techniques, our Transplant Surgery Department at UPMC has performed thousands of transplants. Our living kidney donation program provides donors and recipients with state-of-the-art care in a supportive environment.

Our transplant services are provided in a supportive environment by a multidisciplinary team experienced in all aspects of advanced kidney disease and the care of transplant recipients and donors. Our staff includes experienced transplant surgeons and nephrologists, as well as a support team that includes transplant coordinators, social workers, financial/insurance coordinators, pharmacists, nurse practitioners and dietitians. All our staff are dedicated to providing continuity of care for patients, donors and families.

We provide special services for living donors, including a dedicated Independent Donor Advocate, whose role is to ensure that living donors understand the donation process, have had their questions answered, and get the specialized support and consideration they deserve.

• State-of-the-Art Surgical Techniques — Our surgeons are expert at the most advanced surgical techniques.
• Paired Donor Exchange —This program allows living donors to donate a kidney despite incompatible blood matches. In paired donation, a donor and recipient are matched with another incompatible donor and recipient pair, and the kidneys are exchanged between the pairs.
• Clinical Research and Trials — The UPMC in central Pa. transplant program participates in clinical trials and research, allowing patients access to leading-edge medication protocols, technology, organ recovery techniques, surgical techniques and post-transplant care.
• Integrated post transplant care — We continue to provide care for patients throughout the lifespan of the transplanted kidney. In coordination with local nephrologists we are able to offer comprehensive multidisciplinary care to all our patients.
