Radioactive Seed Implantation
This leading-edge prostate cancer treatment creates minimal discomfort and side effects, and is available through the Radiation Oncology Division at PinnacleHealth Regional Cancer Center. Traditional treatments for prostate cancer include radical surgery or external beam radiation. With seed implantation, tiny radioactive seeds smaller than grains of rice are permanently inserted into the prostate gland. The seeds can deliver two-to-three times more concentrated radiation to the prostate gland with less radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. The advantage of seed implantation is that it allows the delivery of very large doses of radiation very safely. Seed implantation causes minimal discomfort, with no hair loss, nausea or vomiting.
The procedure doesn't involve lengthy hospitalization. Patients can resume normal activities after an overnight stay. Most patients require only one treatment, as opposed to daily radiation treatments over several weeks with traditional radiation therapy. For additional information on seed implantation, call (717) 782-4740.
When appropriate, patients may receive treatment at home through PinnacleHealth’s JCAHO-accredited retail pharmacy.
