Types of Bariatric Surgery

Our bariatric surgeons are expert in the most advanced surgical options for weight loss. We specialize in minimally invasive options that offer faster healing and better results.

If your weight loss plans would best be achieved through surgery, our physicians and staff will work with you to determine which procedure is safest and most appropriate for you.

Surgical options include:

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery removes approximately 85% of your stomach and re-shapes the remaining portion into a tube or “sleeve”. The result is a much smaller stomach which leaves you feeling less hunger and limits the amount of food you can take in.

Gastric sleeve surgery is considered a “restrictive” procedure, in that it reduces the size of meal portions your body can tolerate without changing the digestive process. However, a specialized diet and regimen of chewable and/or dissolvable vitamin supplements is recommended following the procedure. Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery (Roux-En-Y) is a procedure in which a small section of the stomach is closed off, creating a stomach pouch. That pouch is then connected directly to the small intestine, allowing food to bypass the rest of the stomach, as well as the start of the intestinal tract. As a result, the new stomach will hold less food and keep it for a shorter period of time.

Because it creates a smaller stomach and changes the digestive process, gastric bypass is considered “restrictive” and “malabsorptive.” Following the procedure, you will need to commit to a lifelong maintenance plan which focuses on foods your body can easily process, as well as a regular exercise program.

In addition to consistent follow up with your physician after gastric bypass surgery, PinnacleHealth also offers ongoing support services such as specialized nutrition services and support groups.

LAP-BAND® Surgery

LAP-BAND® surgery reduces the size of the opening from the esophagus to the stomach with a “Lap Band” device, restricting your food intake.

Using an adjustable band to constrict and reduce the size of your stomach, laparoscopic adjustable banding limits the amount of food you are physically able to take in, causing you to feel full sooner when eating. Beginning 30 days after placement, the band is gradually adjusted over time to manage your food intake.
Band placement is a minimally invasive procedure that requires an overnight stay in the hospital.

LAP-BAND® surgery is considered a “restrictive” surgery, in that it reduces the size of meal portions your body can tolerate without changing the digestive process. Still, specialized multi-vitamins, such as The Band Complete or the Weight Loss Center VitaTab Chewable Multi-Vitamin are recommended for Lap Band patients. Revisional Bariatric Surgery

When a prior weight loss surgery is altered it is called “revisional” weight loss surgery. A revisional surgery may be indicated if you have had inadequate weight loss and/or complications. We offer multiple options for revisional weight loss surgery including:

  • Band above bypass or previous stomach stapling
  • Revision of bands
  • Revision of gastric bypass surgery

It is important to note that revisional surgery may have additional risks associated with it. Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you at your consultation.
