Cancer Rehabilitation Program
At the PinnacleHealth Cancer Institute we are committed to providing a continuum of survivorship services, including cancer rehabilitation.
Survivorship is a distinct phase of cancer care. As a survivor, you or your loved one may face physical and emotional challenges that can significantly impact quality of life. This is why the PinnacleHealth Cancer Institute offers our patients the STAR Program® (Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation), a reimbursable cancer rehabilitation program that helps cancer survivors heal and resume normal day-to-day activities.
A Commitment to Optimal Recovery
A cancer diagnosis can be traumatic — life-saving treatments can be as well. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery can impact overall health and may cause significant medical problems that interfere with daily function and well-being. Cancer survivors often have symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, insomnia, memory loss, fear, anxiety and depression. The PinnacleHealth STAR Program® offers important physical and psychological rehabilitation services to survivors so they can recover more quickly and completely than they would otherwise.
We serve all survivors in need, whether they are beginning treatment, finished with treatment, or experiencing late effects or unresolved issues from long-ago treatment. Our program is open to everyone, no matter the prognosis, cancer stage or phase of recovery.
- Newly diagnosed patients can increase their strength and endurance and prevent future medical problems.
- Survivors living with cancer as a chronic disease can receive help managing treatment-related conditions.
- Individuals who are cured or in remission can boost their immune systems to promote healing.
Our rehabilitation care, which is based on conventional medicine, is offered to patients by knowledgeable and sensitive medical staff, specially trained to treat survivors of all forms of cancer. They are medical experts at the top of their fields in a variety of disciplines:
- Physical therapists
- Occupational therapists
- Speech and swallowing therapists
- Registered dieticians and nutritionists
- Mental health professionals
The majority of our services are reimbursable by health insurance providers. Please check with your insurance provider.
A "Big Picture" Approach to Your Recovery
Rather than using a problem-oriented approach that addresses health issues as they arise, we address the full spectrum of post-cancer care, including:
- Sleep issues
- Existing pain
- Exercise habits
- Emotional outlook
A Personalized Interdisciplinary Plan
After undergoing a thorough evaluation by a physician, each patient is assigned a team of medical specialists according to his or her individual needs. This team creates a personalized rehabilitation plan and offers guidance for the duration of the program with the goals of increasing strength and energy, alleviating pain, improving physical functioning, achieving emotional balance and boosting the immune system.
Who Should Be Referred to Cancer Rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation services are for anyone who is undergoing cancer treatment, who has recently completed cancer treatment, or who is living with unresolved problems from treatment such as musculoskeletal pain, decreased endurance and strength, balance problems, fatigue, among others.
Where Is the STAR Program® based?
