At UPMC in central Pa., we are committed to giving you the best start in your new nursing position by providing a comprehensive, robust orientation. After your general hospital orientation, you will receive a unit-specific orientation that is designed by your unit’s staff development instructor to meet your specific training needs.
You will be assigned to work side-by-side with an experienced registered nurse (RN) preceptor throughout your orientation. Your preceptor is one of many resources available to you during your training. Other knowledgeable, helpful resources include:
During your orientation, you may shadow in areas that work closely with your department, such as the operating room, cardiac catheterization lab and other diagnostic areas.
