About Our CEO

Young Mike WSH 057Michael A. Young assumed office as President and Chief Executive Officer of PinnacleHealth System on June 27, 2011, bringing nearly three decades of leadership experience in the health-care industry.

He returned to his native Pennsylvania after a successful stint (September 2008 – June 2011), leading the turnaround of the Grady Health System and Grady Memorial Hospital, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Young received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978, a Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979, and he is also a graduate of Harvard Business School’s advanced management program. He has been a fellow in the American College of Hospital Administrators since 1994 and has mentored numerous CEOs throughout the United States.

He began his career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) at Shadyside in 1979, before he moved to Lancaster General Hospital & Health System as vice president in 1986 and became president in 1988. During his tenure in Lancaster, Young built a new Women’s Hospital, Orthopedic Hospital and cutting-edge ambulatory services program.

Prior to Grady, Young was President and CEO of Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) in Buffalo, New York. He was a key player in turning around ECMC’s historical operating losses - to its first ever operating gain in 2006, a $32 million turnaround in two years.

During his first year at Grady, Young achieved a turnaround of almost $75 million and reduced costs by nearly $20 million, while providing an additional $80 million in free care. Under his leadership, medication errors significantly declined and infection rates dropped by 50 percent.

His work with the Greater Grady Capital Campaign helped raise more than $300 million for facility and equipment upgrades. Upgrades covered the new Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center, a completely refurbished radiology department, a new PACS system, new angioplasty and cardiac catheterization equipment and 21 new ambulances for the Grady EMS fleet.

Mike has been married for 29 years to Karen, a nurse and they have two sons. Mike enjoys golf, travel and community development.
