Tobacco Cessation Programs

UPMC in central Pa. has the programs and resources you need to quit smoking. All of our programs are taught by a trained tobacco cessation educator.

Introduction to Tobacco-Free Living

This one-time session provides a group atmosphere with a combination of facilitated open interaction and formal presentation styled learning facilitated by a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist. The topics discussed include but aren't limited to:

  • General overview of the nature of tobacco use addiction
  • Potential health complications connected to tobacco use
  • Benefits of quitting
  • Treatment Options
  • Quitting resources

This presentation can serve as a foundation-laying approach to stimulate thought for a general audience, and serve to encourage and provide supportive tools to a current tobacco user, ex-tobacco user, and a friend or family member of a tobacco user. All classes are held at:

Tobacco Cessation Class Series

This class is a structured series of weekly classes lead and facilitated by a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist. This class is for Tobacco Users that are ready to be free from the grips of their Tobacco Use. The Tobacco User will develop a plan and learn to utilize tools and resources that are valuable to achieve and maintain tobacco cessation success. The class series is held at:

Tobacco Cessation Support Group

This is a once-a-month support group facilitated by a certified tobacco treatment specialist. It is FREE to anyone who wishes to make a positive change in their life. There has never been a better time to quit using tobacco and stop smoking! The support group takes place at the Community Center at the Camp Hill Giant Super Food Store.

Freedom From Smoking Program

The seven week course is tailored for individuals and businesses within the community. You will learn about effective ways to quit smoking, determine which method is best suited for you, and construct a customized quit plan. Community classes are offered in York and Hanover, and interested businesses can make arrangements for an onsite employee program (call for details).

Individual Cessation Coaching

Not a “group person?” No problem! UPMC in central Pa. offers individualized one-on-one quit programs in a convenient, easy-to-find outpatient office setting, as well as referrals for telephone quit coaching and online quit programs. All of these programs explore tobacco use issues and devise a custom quit plan, which may include the patch, gum, lozenges, behavior modification, hypnosis, Chantix, Zyban, and going “cold turkey.” If you have already quit, we can provide you with the support you need to make sure you remain smoke-free. Some programs may offer free nicotine replacement products. Cost: FREE. Dates: Ongoing - can be scheduled at anytime.

Nicotine Support Group

UPMC in central Pa. Memorial offers the only in-person Nicotine Support Group in York County. No matter what form of tobacco product you are using or have used, including electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, or how many times you have tried to quit, this group will benefit you. Participants share common experiences, learn about the power of nicotine, and benefit from a caring atmosphere. Cost: FREE Dates: Ongoing - every first and third Tuesday, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Online Tobacco Cessation Support Groups

UPMC in central Pa. now offers virtual support groups on Facebook! This convenient option offers members the latest information about tobacco use addiction, complications of use, benefits of quitting, treatment options, and access to other supportive resources. Moderated by our team of tobacco treatment specialists, our support groups are a place where current and former tobacco users come together to share ideas, discuss topics, and tell their stories. Interactive features include videos, posts, activities, and active discussions about the quitting process and staying quit. Join us and connect with other members who understand what you are going through. Signing up is quick, easy and free – and you can join us whenever you’re ready!
