Services We offer

UPMC offers several opportunities for diabetes education through in-person appointments, video visits, and group classes. A referral is needed from your primary care provider for your diabetes management for each specific service. For additional information, please call 717-221-6270.

Diabetes Education

We offer diabetes education designed to meet your individual needs. Our focus is on helping you achieve your individual diabetes goals. This education is provided at a convenient UPMC location and includes basic diabetes information and self-blood glucose monitoring.

Diabetes Class Series- Making the Pieces Fit

Recognized by the American Diabetes Association as a quality education program this multi-part class series for people with diabetes. Learn as a group about food, activity, medication, complication prevention, management and how to cope with this chronic disease. The program includes a pre-class one-on-one assessment, followed by several group classes, and conclude with a one-on-one follow up for further help. The classes are taught by diabetes nurse educators and dieticians, and are offered multiple times throughout the year.

To register, contact your primary care provider for your diabetes management for a referral to UPMC diabetes class series. Our office will contact you once the referral is received to schedule your class. Please contact your insurance to verify coverage. Deductibles and/or coinsurance may apply. Diabetes and Pregnancy

Individualized education is focused on helping you have a healthy baby when experiencing diabetes during pregnancy. Instruction includes information on diabetes and pregnancy, blood glucose monitoring, low blood glucose management, activity, and nutrition. Diabetes nurse educators are available throughout your pregnancy to assist you with any concerns you may have.

Nutrition Education

We offer individualized nutrition education with the focus on improving blood sugar control, reducing heart disease risk factors and weight management. These appointments are offered at all UPMC hospitals in central Pa.

Intensive Insulin Management

If you use insulin therapy, we will work with you and your provider to help you learn how to manage your diabetes better to achieve your individual goals. Learn how to make changes in your food choices, activity, medication, and insulin. Insulin pump education and management services offered.

Virtual Diabetes Care

Virtual Diabetes Care is a 12-week program to help people with A1C levels greater than 8 gain control of their diabetes using weekly virtual video visits with our diabetes team.
