It's 2013, the start of a new year. If you are someone who makes yearly resolutions, why not make this years resolution to reduce your risk for developing cancer. Did you know that almost 1/3 of all cancers that occur every year can be prevented? The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) has developed recommendations for Cancer Prevention. I list them below and you may link to the website for more detailed information.

-
Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight.
-
Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day.
-
Avoid sugary drinks. Limit consumption of energy-dense foods. (high in carbs and saturated fats-- think donuts and cookies !!)
-
Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes such as beans.
-
Limit consumption of red meats (such as beef, pork and lamb) and avoid processed meats.
-
If consumed at all, limit alcoholic drinks to 2 for men and 1 for women a day.
-
Limit consumption of salty foods and foods processed with salt (sodium).
-
Don't use supplements to protect against cancer.
-
* It is best for mothers to breastfeed exclusively for up to 6 months and then add other liquids and foods.
-
* After treatment, cancer survivors should follow the recommendations for cancer prevention.
REMEMBER, ANY CHANGE, NO MATTER HOW SMALL, IS A GOOD START. WHY NOT TRY ONE OF THE ITEMS ON THE LIST TO GET STARTED. FOR ME, I AM ELIMINATING MEAT FROM MY DIET 3 DAYS/WEEK.
