The Inpatient Palliative Medicine team develops an individualized plan to meet each patient's needs. Treatment under palliative medicine focuses on:
- Helping to avoid and treat acute episodes
- Optimizing comfort and reducing physical suffering though management of bothersome, painful symptoms
- Managing symptoms and stress of disease at any stage in the life of the illness for patient and family
- Providing active total care of a patient whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment
- Giving devoted care to the patient rather than to his/her disease
