Student Career Exploration

Students interested in exploring a career in healthcare can take advantage of several hands-on experiences that expose students to a variety a fields.

These experiences include:

  • Xtreme Nursing – this half-day program, offered four times a year, introduces students to the field of nursing through hands-on exploration, tours and interviews with nurses from various departments.
  • HealthCare Career Night – a night of career exploration during which students and parents can network with healthcare professionals, area colleges, and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).
  • Destination Imaging – this workshop is for students interested in the radiology field. Students will attend six presentations focused on investigating a career in radiological sciences.
  • Experience the Lab – this half-day program is for students interested in the laboratory field. Students will discover where diagnoses are made, see how the lab is run, witness where blood is prepared for transfusions, and visit other departments where science experiments are performed.

Co-op Volunteer Program
In addition to these experiences, PinnacleHealth offers a high school co-op volunteer program in coordination with many area high schools. A maximum of two students at any time are accepted from each participating high school. Applications are accepted in early spring of the student’s junior year.

Selected students complete orientation in June, prior to beginning the program in the fall when their senior year commences. Students are required to commit to a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service during the school year, volunteering a minimum of 2 – 3 hours each shift. Program length is typically 9 months, however, shorter co-op volunteer experiences will be considered with a minimum of a three month commitment. If you are interested in participating in this program, please have your school co-op coordinator (or school-to-work coordinator) contact Andrea Flowers, 657-7397, or Vonnie Kain 782-3353.
