Anatomic Pathology

•  Histotechnologist — Similar, but more demanding duties than a histotechnician.

Education: Baccalaureate degree and completion of an accredited histology program and a national registry examination.

• Histotechnician — Prepare slides for interpretation by a pathologist.

Education: HS diploma and completion of an accredited histology program and a national registry examination. 

• Pathologist’s Assistant — Interacts with pathologist in the same manner that physician assistants carry out their duties under the direction of a physician. Perform a variety of tasks consisting primarily of gross examinations of surgical pathology specimens and assistance at autopsies.

Education: BS degree or Associates degree in science with one year experience. Must also acquire specialized on-the-job training. 

• Transcriptionist — Transcribes dictation from Pathologists and Pathology Assistants.

Education: HS diploma with medical terminology and transcription experience.
