Purpose: 

The Professional Development Council develops, implements, and maintains educational standards, along with those programs which promote professional growth, career advancement, and ongoing clinical competency. The Professional Development Council establishes and maintains an interdisciplinary link to other hospital departments to promote open communication, foster collaboration, and provide a nursing perspective in the resolution of issues. Nurses are empowered to succeed through programs initiated and supported by the Professional Development Council. 

Activities: 

  • Identify and evaluate nursing educational needs
  • Collaborate with nursing educators to determine the process to best meet educational needs and evaluate the effectiveness of nursing education programs
  • Collaborate with nursing educators to determine competencies for system-wide staff
  • Collaborate with the Nursing Research Council and Clinical Education Committee
  • Facilitate the development of competencies
  • Facilitate preceptor and mentoring roles
  • Support peer review process
  • Support Career Development Pathway
  • Promote system wide adherence to Code of Ethics for Nurses
  • Represent nursing perspective as part of the System Ethics Committee
  • Promote individual nurse accountability
