Judy Arnold, Transplant Services, had used the Spanish Post Transplant Manual and the Cyracom phone to provide education for a Spanish speaking patient, but felt that they needed an easy to read handout to take home. Hilda was providing diabetes education for the same patient and volunteered to take Judy's document and translate it into a fluent Spanish that the patient could understand. Judy states, "I realize how precious her time was with just doing her own diabetes teaching. She showed a true "Magnet Moment" by assisting the patient in comprehensive transplant education and providing a tool for the transplant team to utilize in the future for Spanish speaking patients."
Liz Perez, Customer Relations, writes that Hilda took time at the end of her day to meet with a distraught family member of a discharged patient who had brought Liz a broken glucometer. "Hilda spent a good amount of time with him, provided him with a new meter and extra test strips."
Hilda also began a Hispanic Support Group last year for Spanish speaking persons with diabetes. It is a very successful group, with average attendance of 15 persons/month and meets a previously unmet community need.
Her community participation doesn't stop there. Hilda is active in her church as part of the ministry team. She is also a Spanish tutor. Hilda says that her recreational activities include reading, music and summertime swimming.
