PinnacleHealth Sports Medicine Offers Injury Hotline

HARRISBURG, Pa. (August 19, 2013) – PinnacleHealth Sports Medicine launched a Sports Medicine Hotline that puts you in touch with a qualified orthopedic surgeon or specially trained sports medicine physician 24 hours a day, seven days a week for prompt sports injury care. A sports medicine specialist will help you decide how quickly you need medical treatment, and if injury requires medical care, our team will refer you to the appropriate provider.
“At PinnacleHealth, our orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists and rehabilitation professionals have been treating athletes from the weekend warrior to the professional level for many years,” states Timothy Ackerman, DO, orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine fellow. "Our sports injury hotline will allow athletes, coaches and parents to get evaluation of sports related injuries from qualified specialists quickly and efficiently.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 7,100 children ages 0-19 were treated in hospital emergency departments for sports and recreation-related injuries each day in 2009. That works out to 2.6 million children a year. And many more injuries are treated in doctor’s offices and primary, acute care, and sports medicine clinics. In addition, sports injuries among baby boomers increased by 33 percent from 1991 to 1998 as reported in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report, and the number of injuries keeps increasing every year.
"We frequently see more baby boomers in our practices. As we age and want to maintain an active lifestyle, we are at an increased risk of a muscle strain, ligament tear or joint injury." John Frankeny, MD, FACS, orthopedic surgeon. "Even if an injury seems minor, it's important to seek prompt medical advice early, since doing so can help prevent unnecessary aggravation of an injury and can help an athlete return to competition safely and more quickly."
PinnacleHealth is partnering with Arlington Orthopedics, the Orthopedic Institute of Pennsylvania (OIP) and the PinnacleHealth Orthopedic Residency Program. To contact a specialist with the PinnacleHealth Sports Medicine program, call toll free, 855-979-SPORT for sports-related injuries.
