PinnacleHealth has been recertified as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). This national certification is re-evaluated every three years and ensures continued compliance with the ASMBS’s requirements for bariatric surgery.
The center first received certification in March 2007. Certified hospitals must meet requirements in 10 areas of focus. They include institutional commitment to excellence, surgical experience and volumes, responsive critical care support, and surgeon dedication and qualified call coverage. The renewal indicates that PinnacleHealth’s Bariatric Surgery program consistently provides safe, effective and evidence-based bariatric surgical care.
“We are proud to be recognized by the ASMBS. Since 1998, we have completed more than 5,000 bariatric procedures. Our program is characterized by its very low infection and complication rates and excellent results,” said Luciano DiMarco, DO, medical director of Bariatric Surgery at PinnacleHealth.
To earn a Center of Excellence designation by the ASMBS, PinnacleHealth’s bariatric program underwent a site inspection from the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) -- an industry non-profit dedicated to advancing surgical excellence -- during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes were collected.
Programs recognized as an ASMBS Center of Excellence offer high quality care with consistent practice for each patient. PinnacleHealth and the other national medical centers receiving the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation agree to continue to share information on clinical pathways, protocols and outcomes data.
