PinnacleHealth is one of the hospitals representing the high quality hospital care available in Pennsylvania according to the Cardiac Surgery Report by Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4).

The report, covering July 1, 2011, through December 31, 2012, examined more than 20,000 coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and/or valve surgeries performed in 59 of Pennsylvania’s acute care hospitals. This report includes outcomes on in-hospital mortality, 30-day readmission rates and charge analysis.

PinnacleHealth CardioVascular Institute (PHCVI) surgeons performed 378 coronary artery bypass (CABG) and 360 valve surgeries while maintaining lower mortality and readmission rates.

“PinnacleHealth CardioVascular Institute surgeons perform more coronary artery bypass and valve surgeries than any other hospital in the region and is in the top five acute care hospitals in Pennsylvania. While maintaining this high volume, important quality indicators such as mortality and readmission rates remain low,” states Michael A. Young, president & CEO for PinnacleHealth. “In addition, these procedures are performed at a lower cost than others in the state, proving that integrated care provided by experienced physicians and care givers makes a difference for our patients.”

PinnacleHealth also achieved the coveted Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) highest 3-star overall for three consecutive rating periods in part because of survival rates that consistently exceed STS benchmarks. PHCVI is involved in more than 50 clinical trials for cardiac care and nearly 20 for vascular disease.

“PinnacleHealth CardioVascular Institute is nationally recognized for its cardiology and cardiac surgery programs. We care for more than 94,000 patients every year. These achievements can only be possible through everyone’s hard work and dedication to make sure that each patient receives the best we have to offer,” states Mubashir Mumtaz, MD, chief of cardiovascular & thoracic surgery.

PHC4 is an independent state agency charged with collecting, analyzing and reporting information that can be used to improve the quality of healthcare in Pennsylvania.
