HARRISBURG, Pa. (October 22, 2013) -- The not-for-profit PinnacleHealth System is launching a donor campaign for its new cancer center
. Located on its West Shore Campus in Hampden Township, the Ortenzio Cancer Center at PinnacleHealth
will provide advanced cancer care and supportive services for cancer patients in the same location. The West Shore location will
promote convenience for patients and visitors.
As the population grows and ages, the need for cancer care will increase. By 2017, more than 35 percent of people on the West Shore will be over age 55, and cancer cases in the PinnacleHealth service area are estimated to exceed more than 27,000. Within the next five years, need for chemotherapy services for West Shore residents is projected to increase by more than 20 percent and demand for the most common radiation therapy treatment (IMRT) is projected to increase by more than 50 percent.
”Our experience has shown that one of the greatest barriers to patient care and comfort is distance,” said Brij M. Sood, MD
, radiation oncologist and director of radiation oncology
at PinnacleHealth. “Transportation costs, family commitments, work and scheduling become complicated and exhausting when patients receive treatment far from home.”
“The Ortenzio Foundation believes that health care and education are two pillars that lead to strong and vibrant communities, which in turn improves quality of life for everyone,” said Rocco A. Ortenzio. “Our Foundation is grateful for the opportunity to help the patients that the new Cancer Center will serve.”
With planned completion in August 2014, the Ortenzio Cancer Center will offer:
Centralized services within one facility for patient and family convenience
State-of-the-art radiation therapy technology to provide the most options for patients
On-site laboratory for the expedited delivery of lab results
Physician suites for easy access to collaborative specialty care for the most common cancers
Infusion areas that are design for maximum patient comfort and privacy, efficiency and aesthetics
A tranquility garden that offers a serene and beautiful location for patients, visitors, and employees to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate during their time of diagnosis and treatment
“It so critical to have cancer treatment close to home. Not just treatment, but cutting edge, advanced technology offered in a comfortable and restorative and healing setting. The Ortenzio Cancer Center will bring the feeling that you are not alone in this journey, and that our patients have the treatment and resources they need in order to get better – that hope for a healthier future is possible. I hope others join me in supporting the Ortenzio Cancer Center,” shared Larry Sollenberger, MD, campaign chair for the Ortenzio Cancer Center at PinnacleHealth.
“Cancer care at PinnacleHealth is truly patient-centered. More than treating just the physical aspects of cancer, we address the whole person – mind, body and spirit. To us, cancer care is more than aggressive, technological treatments. It’s about compassionate, holistic care,” said Jose E. Misas, MD
, gynecologic oncology surgeon
, PinnacleHealth Women’s Cancer Center.
The new cancer center is one of several projects that are part of Vision 2017
and will be near the new West Shore Hospital scheduled to open May 2014. The total cost of the more than 26,000 square feet Cancer Center will be $20 million.
PinnacleHealth opened the Cancer Center on the PinnacleHealth Community Campus in 2011. The East Shore Center houses the only CyberKnife
in the area, a robotic radiosurgery system
designed for non-invasive treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. Since then, the cancer center has provided access to a full-range of cancer services—radiation oncology
, infusion therapy
, nurse navigation, patient and family education and cancer risk assessment--in one location to maximize patient convenience.
