HARRISBURG, PA – On Thursday, March 15, Luciano DiMarco, DO
, general and bariatric surgeon at PinnacleHealth, was the first surgeon in Pennsylvania to remove a diseased gallbladder through a patient’s belly button with the aid of a newly FDA-approved da Vinci Single Site technology
, part of the da Vinci Si Surgical System. With one incision, Dr. DiMarco removed the gallbladder in 60 minutes. The patient returned home five hours after the groundbreaking surgery and reported minimal pain.
“Instead of the multiple incisions with a traditional laparoscopic surgery, we can operate through one small cut near the belly button with tools that function with great precision in a narrow space. Robotic-assisted surgery has been a great option for patients, but now we can do an entire gallbladder procedure using just one cosmetically hidden incision. It is easier on the patient, and the technology provides better surgical skill,” states Dr. DiMarco.
Each year, about one million people in the United States will undergo gallbladder removal surgery. Of that number, 40 percent of these patients are women, ages 18 to 44. In the Harrisburg area alone, there were more than 1,500 gallbladder removal surgeries performed last year. Thanks to the latest breakthrough in robotic-assisted surgery, patients can now have their gallbladder removed in about the same amount of time as a lunch break, and be home in time for dinner with minimal discomfort and potentially no visible scar.
Dr. DiMarco performed two Single Site gall bladder removals on the same day. Both patients were discharged later that day and able to work from home the following Monday.
Intuitive Surgical, Inc. received FDA-approval on the new operating platform for the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System
specifically for cholecystectomy procedures, the surgical removal of the gallbladder. The system enables surgeons to reduce the traditional number of incisions from 4- 6 small incisions to one incision that is less than an inch in length.
Surgeons at PinnacleHealth use the da Vinci System for a variety of minimally invasive robotic surgical procedures, including cardiac, general, gynecological, spine and urological surgery.
I can make arrangements for you to interview Dr. Luciano DiMarco and speak to one of his single-site robotic patients. In addition, we have B-roll video the surgery for your use. If you are interested, please contact Kelly McCall at 231-8104 or 576-2520 (cell).
