The Ortenzio Cancer Center
at PinnacleHealth opened today, Monday, August 18. Located on i
s West Shore Campus in Hampden Township, the Ortenzio Cancer Center at PinnacleHealth will provide comprehensive oncology services in multiple specialty areas, including cancer risk assessment, women’s cancer treatment, radiation oncology, medical oncology, infusion services and cancer clinical trials. The West Shore location will provide greater convenience for patients and visitors.
Cancer touches the lives of thousands of people in central Pennsylvania each year. It is projected that there will be at least 27,000 patients living with cancer in the midstate over the next five years.
“For cancer patients, treatment can be exhausting. Patients and their loved ones are traveling to appointments several times a week. Having high quality, coordinated care close to home can be critical on the journey to recovery. We want to provide that to our patients,” states Michael A. Young, president and CEO for PinnacleHealth.
“With national recognitions for quality, including the National Accreditation of Breast Centers and Commission on Cancer accreditation, as well as the endorsement from current patients, PinnacleHealth is well known to be a highly qualified, well-liked and trusted destination for clinical care,” adds Young.
The multidisciplinary team at the Ortenzio Cancer Center consists of an array of cancer specialists—including breast surgeons, medical oncologists, gynecologic oncology surgeons, radiation oncologists and nurse navigators.
“In my experience, well-coordinated care leads to
better patient outcomes and a better patient experience. The Ortenzio Cancer Center offers patients all the services they could need and allows physicians like myself to easily work as part of a team to coordinate the
best care for our patients,” states Theresa Lee, MD
, medical oncologist, PinnacleHealth Breast Care Center. “I am honored to be a part of this team and to be able to provide individualized, compassionate care for women in this great new facility.”
The 26,000-square-foot center fulfills PinnacleHealth’s vision for integrated, patient-centered care by putting invaluable cancer services on the same campus as the West Shore Hospital and the Fredricksen
Outpatient Center, offering a full continuum of high quality services where patients need it, close to home.
The Ortenzio Cancer Center will offer:
Centralized services within one facility for patient and family convenience
State-of-the-art radiation therapy technology to provide the most options for patients
On-site laboratory for the expedited delivery of lab results
Physician suites for easy access to collaborative specialty care for the most common cancers
Infusion areas that are designed for maximum patient comfort and privacy, as well as efficiency and aesthetics
A tranquility garden that offers a serene and beautiful location for patients, visitors, and employees to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate during their time of diagnosis and treatment
While the center will provide cancer care for both men and women, the new facility will offer a specialized focus on coordinated care for women with breast and gynecologic cancers. It is expected that 38 percent of those living with cancer in the next five years will be women with breast or cervical cancer. The second floor of the Ortenzio Cancer Center is dedicated to diagnosis and treatment of women’s cancer, and will house the Women’s Cancer Center
, the Breast Care Center
and Medical Oncology and Infusion Services.
“PinnacleHealth is currently the largest provider of both breast and gynecologic cancer services in the area,” states Nicholas DeLapo, vice president for Oncology Services at PinnacleHealth. “Because we are seeing more and more women—often as young as in their 20s—diagnosed with breast and gynecologic cancer, it is imperative that PinnacleHealth has the most leading-edge oncology services in place to aggressively battle these treatable and often curable diseases.”
The Ortenzio Cancer Center complements the existing PinnacleHealth Cancer Center located on the Community Campus
. The East Shore center houses the region’s first CyberKnifeTM
, a robotic radiosurgery system designed for non-invasive treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, as well as radiation oncology, infusion therapy, medical oncology, breast care specialists, nurse navigation, patient and family education and cancer risk assessment.
PinnacleHealth began construction on the $20 million facility in the summer of 2013. The project was funded in part by a generous donation from The Ortenzio Foundation as well as community and corporate donors.
