100 Day Countdown Begins -- PinnacleHealth West Shore Hospital to Open Mid-May

2/10/2014
PinnacleHealth begins a countdown today to the opening of the new West Shore Hospital in Mechanicsburg. In 100 days – on May 19, 2014 – the new facility will open its doors.

PinnacleHealth broke ground for the new hospital October 3, 2012. Since that day, the community has been watching as the five story, 108-bed hospital is constructed.

“When we rolled out our Vision 2017 a year ago, we laid out the blueprint for meeting the vital needs of our growing community for years to come.  The new West Shore Hospital is a key component in expanding the continuum of care already established in the West Shore,” states Michael A. Young, president & CEO for PinnacleHealth. “We are looking forward to opening the doors in May, offering quality care, innovation and lower costs, so that we can more efficiently and effectively provide care to residents across the region.”

In the coming months, PinnacleHealth will share information via news, Internet and social media to show the community what goes into opening a new hospital. There will be daily social media posts that include contests and a few surprises along the way. And each week, hospital staff and physicians will be introduced and special features for the patient experience will be explained.

For example, did you know that there will be personal entertainment centers in each room that feature educational videos about patients’ conditions and treatments? During their stays, patients can watch the videos and take quizzes afterward to test their knowledge.

Every room will also feature a digital whiteboard, similar to a traditional whiteboard on which nurses and physicians write their names in marker during their rounds. This digital version will display pictures, names and full titles of the staff members serving patients, as well as information about the care patients are receiving.

“Development of the new West Shore facility includes a major focus on patient comfort and safety. The digital whiteboard will give patients and their loved ones up-to-the-minute information on what to expect day in and day out as they recover from a surgical procedure or are being monitored after an illness,” states Mark Barabas, chief operating officer for the PinnacleHealth West Shore Hospital. “This feature will bring peace of mind to patients and families during their stay.”

The West Shore Hospital by the Numbers:
  • 108 private rooms
  • 3 heart catheterization labs
  • 7 leading-edge operating rooms
  • Emergency Department with 18 treatment rooms
  • Intensive Care Unit with 12 beds
  • Multiple nursing stations in each unit throughout the facility
  • 188,000-square-foot facility and its expert staff will meet a range of needs, providing services that include:
    • Acute and emergency medical care
    • Cardiology
    • Chronic disease management
    • Orthopedics
    • Surgical services
“We’re looking forward to expanding our presence in the West Shore community,” states Barabas. “It’s exciting to be part of creating something new that will have huge impact on the health of our community. It is our hope that residents will appreciate the convenience of having a PinnacleHealth hospital that brings high-quality, patient-centered care, nearby.”
