Hospital patients sometimes 'observed' rather than admitted - Patriot News

Observation is a relatively new designation for hospital care. For the patient, it looks like a regular hospital admission -- the patient is in a normal room receiving normal care. But it makes a big difference for Medicare, which pays for skilled nursing care only for patients who needed a full three days of inpatient hospital care. Joan Silver, vice president of quality for PinnacleHealth, and Sue Thompson, PinnacleHealth's director of integrated care management, provide clarification.
