Saturday, May 12th from 0700-1200 hours
There will be crane activity on the South side of the Medical Science Building (MSB) impacting traffic flow off of 2nd Street, Chestnut Street will be open for access. This activity will block the northern bay of the loading dock during this time period, but the remainder of the loading dock will be available. This will not impact dock-related traffic, but will limit access to emergency vehicles.
Flagger Force will be on-site to assist with traffic control on Saturday.
May 14th and through September 3rd
Effective Monday, May 14th and through Monday, September 3rd the Harrisburg Hospital Emergency Department ambulance bays will be closed to all traffic. During this time period all ambulances and non-emergency patient transport vehicles will have to park and unload their patients up under the Medical Science Building (MSB) and then bring their patients down the public walkway / sidewalk and through the ED Public Entrance where they can they proceed directly back to the Red Pod Communications Desk.
About the Construction Project
The Alex Grass Medical Sciences Building expansion project began on January 7, 2012 . The two-floor development will include the addition of a Select Medical specialty hospital and new private, orthopedic rooms.
This is an exciting opportunity for the system and reflects our continuing growth and commitment to the community. These new enhancements will complement the recently completed Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Emergency Department. Completed in October 2011, the ED now has the capacity to serve 110,000 annual visitors and offers larger, more private and comfortable settings with state-of-the-art technology.
Parking and driving patterns at the Harrisburg Campus will change during construction, but our focus remains on the patient, and we will make visits to the Harrisburg Campus as convenient as possible. Anyone visiting the Harrisburg Campus for emergency care should follow the same process as usual. Visitors should proceed to the ER entrance, and our staff will manage their access and care. Parking will continue to be available at both Harrisburg Hospital and Brady Visitor parking garages.
Our goal is to have this expansion as transparent to our visitors as possible. Traffic will be managed by a security attendant who will ensure that all patients have unrestricted access to the ED entrance. The attendant will be present from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. , seven days a week. There will also be a painted crosswalk from Chestnut Street to the ER hospital entrance.
