Did you know … the basics:
- We include three hospitals with approximately 600 beds.
- We are a teaching hospital with eight residency programs in Internal Medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), General Surgery (allopathic and osteopathic), Pediatric Surgery, Podiatric Surgery, Family Practice (osteopathic) and Orthopedic Surgery (osteopathic). We offer four Fellowship programs in the areas of Toxicology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Sports Medicine and Bariatric Surgery.
- We deliver more than 5,000 babies each year, exceeding any other hospital in the region.
- We perform more than 14,500 surgical procedures each year at Harrisburg Hospital, and more than 8,500 surgical procedures at Community General Hospital.
- We perform more than 70 kidney transplants each year, more than any hospital in the region.
- We perform more than 588 open heart surgeries each year.
Did you know … the firsts:
- PinnacleHealth Heart & Vascular Institute surgeons performed the area’s first heart bypass surgery in 1956.
- The only CyberKnife in Central PA to treat tumors of the brain, neck and spine.
- First in Pennsylvania to have the Aquilion® ONE Volume Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner—the world’s first dynamic volume CT medical imaging system.
- First in Central PA to use the da Vinci ® STM robotic system in 2006 for heart bypass, gynecological and urological surgeries.
- First and only diabetes program in Pennsylvania and one of only 20 nationwide to attain The Joint Commission award for its Disease-Specific Care Certification Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Management.
- The PinnacleHealth Toxicology Center was the first in the U.S. and the only of its kind in PA.
- First use in the U.S. of the new AtriClip device for atrial fibrillation by PinnacleHealth cardiothoracic surgeon Mubashir Mumtaz, MD.
Did you know … ways we give back:
- Community benefit programs and services for fiscal year 2010 exceeded $5 million and more than 800,000 persons were served.
- We provided $51.7 million in uncompensated or under-compensated care in fiscal year 2010.
- We offer a Free Mammogram Program to care for those uninsured or underinsured who cannot afford to get this vital test.
- More than 7,000 hours of care and support provided by PinnacleHealth Hospice volunteers last year.

- Our nurses achieved Magnet Status—the highest national recognition for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
- Nationally recognized heart,neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery programs.
- Affiliated with Fox Chase Cancer Center for clinical trials and research.
- The area’s only high-volume, level III NICU.
- PinnacleHealth Spine Institute provides a comprehensive, customized plan of care for those suffering from back and neck pain.
- Enrolled in more cardiovascular cl inical trials than any other hospital in Central PA.
- Operating two of only 32 McKenzie certified Spine Centers in the country.
- The region’s largest Home Health service, providing home bound care in a multi-county area.
- Established in 1976, PinnacleHealth Hospice cares for more than 900 patients and their families each year.
- Offering the area’s only comprehensive care and counseling for children of sexual and physical abuse. The Children’s Resource Center (CRC) partners with area District Attorneys, police, medical professionals and counselors to help victims and their families prosecute and heal from abuse.
- More than 11,000 diagnostic and interventional coronary and peripheral vascular procedures each year.
- The latest high definition technology for endoscopies, allowing physicians to find lesions previously missed.
Additional Achievements:
- Gold Status Certification by The Joint Commission—Our diabetes management program is the first of any health system in Pennsylvania to attain this certification recognizing hospitals that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes across all inpatient settings.
- Primary Stroke Center—We have achieved certification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission.
- Best Places to Work in PA, 2002-2010—For nine consecutive years,employees have nominated PinnacleHealth for this award. The survey, study and award program was established to identify the best places of employment in Pennsylvania.
- Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare, 2009-2010—Named one of the top 100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare in the U. S.
- Approval with Commendation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC)—As a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center, PinnacleHealth was awarded three-year approval by having voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and undergoing a rigorous evaluation process and performance review.
- PinnacleHealth’s efforts toward eliminating hospital-acquired infections are showing success. Infections that patients acquire during their hospital stay must be reported to the PA Department of Health. Of the more than 250 hospitals in Pennsylvania, PinnacleHealth is one of only 16 that beat the target rates defined by the state. No other hospital in the region was included among the 16.
- Breast Care Center—The PinnacleHealth Breast Care Center has been awarded full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
- Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence—Awarded by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS).
