I recently heard that not all cancers are inherited from your family. Which ones are/are not inherited? My dad had prostate cancer, does that mean my chances of having it are really high?

Cancers that could have a genetic link include: breast, ovarian, prostate, skin, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer.

Just because a family member has or previously had a type of cancer that is commonly hereditary, does not mean you will automatically develop the cancer, but it does put you at greater risk of developing it. If your father had prostate cancer, it may be helpful for you to have a family risk assessment and genetic evaluation done to determine your risk and start taking preventive steps.

PinnacleHealth offers a program called the Family Risk Assessment and Genetic Evaluation through the PinnacleHealth Cancer Center that may be of great assistance to you. Call (717) 724-6765 for more information.

Best of luck to you!
