P.Wilt. - foods that lower cholesterol 7/11/2012 3:59:46 PM

I've struggled with high cholesterol for about a year now and I'd really like to get it down. Are there any foods that naturally help to lower the bad cholesterol in your body? (other than Honey Nut Cheerios)

Oatmeal and other foods that are high in soluble fiber (apples, kidney beans, barley, etc.) help get rid of the "bad" cholesterol in your body. Also, my brother told me that nuts are good to eat too because they keep blood vessels healthy, reducing blood cholesterol.

Here's a list of the foods you should eat to try to lower LDL (the bad cholesterol) in your body:
1) Oatmeal, oat bran, and other high-fiber foods- these foods lower your LDL.
2) Omega 3 Fatty Acids - Omega 3 fatty acids, also called fish oil, are responsible for reducing blood pressure and risk of developing clots, and can be found in fish or taken as a supplement in pill form.
3) Nuts- Helps keep blood vessels healthy and can reduce blood cholesterol.
4) Olive oil- contains numerous antioxidants that will lower the LDL in your body, while keeping HDL, which is your "good" cholesterol.
5) Foods fortified with sterols and stanols- these substances help block the absorption of cholesterol.

Remember, keep your diet clean. Stay clear of foods that contain saturated and trans fats. These 2 types of fat will take you in the opposite direction of healthy cholesterol levels.

do honey nut cheerios truly lower cholesterol? or is it a marketing gimmick to get people to buy the cereal?

I looked it up...Honey Nut Cheerios are "naturally cholesterol-free" and since they are made from whole grains, that means they contain soluble fiber, which does lower cholesterol. The nutrition label says one serving contains 1 gram of soluble fiber, which isn't that much, but it's still a step in the right direction.
