Stroke Care

Our advanced integrated stroke program gives patients the treatment and support they need  to improve faster and return to normal activities sooner. Harrisburg Hospital and Community General Hospital are certified by the Joint Commission as Primary Stroke Centers and Helen Simpson Rehab Hospital is certified in Stroke Care.

Every 40 seconds in the United States someone suffers a stroke, and when treating stroke every second counts.  Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death in the country, annually striking about 795,000 Americans.

As one of  only two hospital systems in Pennsylvania certified by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center and Stroke Rehab Hospital,  PinnacleHealth's Stroke Center offers patients and families in the Harrisburg/Hershey/Carlisle region  a program committed to providing rapid, advanced and complete care for stroke.

Available 24 hours a day, PinnacleHealth has dedicated stroke units at Harrisburg, Community  and West Shore campuses. Our  specially trained teams include neurologists, neurosurgeons, emergency medicine physicians, radiologists, nurses, clinical pharmacists, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, stroke coordinators, and other skilled medical professionals whose coordinated actions begin at our state-of-the-art Emergency Departments.

Our patients receive immediate access to  the latest treatment protocols to minimize long term disability and save lives. The PinnacleHealth stroke team’s proven protocol for improving patient outcomes includes evaluation for Tissue Plasminogen Activator (t-PA), a “clot busting” drug that can dissolve blockage and alleviate stroke symptoms in some patients if administered within four and a half hours of the start of stroke symptoms.
