Kidney Transplant

Kidney transplant is the second most common transplant operation in the United States. People who have developed kidney failure due to high blood pressure, infections, diabetes or other causes are potential candidates for transplant. A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to place a healthy kidney from a donor into a person whose kidneys no longer function properly.

Because only one donated kidney is needed to replace two failed kidneys, a person needing a transplant can receive a kidney from a living donor or from someone who has recently died but has not suffered kidney disease or injury.

Kidney transplantation involves placing a healthy kidney into the body where it can perform all of the functions that a failing kidney cannot.
