Osteoporosis Services

Osteoporosis is a disease which progresses silently and, over time, weakens bone. There are no warning signs until a fracture occurs. Osteoporosis affects nearly half of all post-menopausal women and almost one in three men over the age of 65. More than 1.5 million osteoporosis-related fractures occur each year.

PinnacleHealth provides the most comprehensive osteoporosis program in the region helping men and women with prevention, diagnosis and management of osteoporosis. We provide osteoporosis screenings and treatment options on both the east and west shores at the Community and Cumberland Campuses. The GE Lunar DXA Axial bone densitometer, one of the most advanced diagnostic tools for osteoporosis, helps detect the disease at its earliest stages so patients can get the treatment they need. PinnacleHealth's WomanCare Resource Center also provides free finger or heel scans to measure bone density.

In addition, PinnacleHealth provides physicians with the most comprehensive reports and patients with timely results. In a matter of minutes, the DXA Bone Densitometer measures the density of the spine, hip and forearm—the most frequent fracture sites–to assess risk at an earlier stage. It can also evaluate response to treatment.

How to reduce your risk for osteoporosis:

  • Eat a calcium-rich diet
  • Have milk on your cereal
  • Top your sandwich with cheese
  • Snack on a carton of yogurt and offer one to your teenage daughters, too!
  • Get regular weight-bearing exercise
  • Gain weight if you are underweight
  • Stop smoking
  • Drink alcoholic beverages in moderation, if you drink

PinnacleHealth Imaging has several convenient locations on both the east and west shores for DXA Scans and free bone density screenings.
