Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Program
If you are the victim of a sexual assault, you can receive the supportive care you need at the Emergency Department at PinnacleHealth Harrisburg Hospital. Click the following links for more information about PinnacleHealth
Gynecology and
Women's Health.
A specially trained registered nurse, called a SAFE (sexual assault forensic examiner) nurse, will provide you with a comprehensive examination and care, as she collects forensic evidence to assist law enforcement and district attorneys in investigation and prosecution of the perpetrator.
What you should do following a sexual assault
If possible, do not change or shower following your assault. Come directly to the Emergency Department at Harrisburg Hospital. A room there has been designated, designed and specially equipped for a forensic examination.
When you arrive:
-
A SAFE nurse will be summoned to provide your medical care
-
The YWCA of Greater Harrisburg’s Violence Intervention Program will be notified so you immediately have the option of using services offered by a Rape Crisis Center advocate
-
SAFE nurses examine all sexual assault victims (children and adults, males and females) within 5 days of their assault
-
Care includes emotional support, treatment of physical injuries, collection of forensic evidence, and treatment to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, as desired by the patient, according to established medical protocols
Follow-Up Care
All rape survivors are offered follow-up medical care and referral to law enforcement, Rape Crisis Center and other community agencies providing crisis intervention, psychological care and support for them and their loved ones.
