Biofeedback
With biofeedback therapy, you can learn to relieve pain, increase relaxation, and improve your overall health.
Biofeedback puts you in control of your health, by giving you the tools you need to control your internal body processes and response to stress. With biofeedback therapy, you can learn to relieve pain, increase relaxation, and improve your overall health.
Many of our body processes, including heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension, happen involuntarily and are negatively impacted by stress. In addition, stress can cause serious health problems, including headaches, TMD/TMJ syndrome, and localized pain. These health problems are often due to over-activation of physiological systems in response to stressful events. Changing these responses can eliminate much discomfort and illness and enhance general quality of life.
Through biofeedback, patients can learn to control or influence some of their internal responses to stress and improve their overall health. During a biofeedback session, a therapist attaches electrodes to the skin to transmit information about body processes, including heart rate, breathing, and muscle response, to a monitor. He or she then leads the patient in a series of guided mental exercises and relaxation techniques designed to create the physical changes desired, such as reduced pain or lower blood pressure. Biofeedback is completely safe, and does not have any side effects.
Biofeedback is effective in treating many conditions, including:
- Anxiety
- Chronic pain
- Constipation
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Epilepsy and related seizure disorders
- High blood pressure
- Migraines
- Muscle Spasms
- TMD/TMJ syndrome
Treatment sessions can last 30 minutes to an hour, depending on individual patient needs. Most patients see results after 8-10 sessions, although more severe conditions, such as high blood pressure, require more sessions. Patients also need to do exercises on their own between sessions for best results.
