Child Safety

Keeping your children safe is important to all parents, grandparents and caregivers. It’s important to PinnacleHealth, too. Kids are exposed to so many outside influences—many of which are out of our control—affecting their physical and emotional development, making it even more critical to protect them.

Sometimes, however, the unthinkable can happen. Unspeakable and often undetected situations such as child abuse and lead poisoning can find their way into a young person’s life. PinnacleHealth is here as an educational resource for you and your family in your time of need. Click on the links below to learn more about our services, screenings and support groups.

Car Seat Safety

Child Safety Seat Inspection Information

Federal and Pennsylvania law requires children to be fastened in a car safety seat that meets federal standards.
In addition to compliance with the law, the use of a car seat also has the following benefits:

  • Prevents your infant's body from acting as a missile in the event of an accident.
  • Reduces the incidence of death or injury by spreading the impact along the strongest part of the infant's body.
  • Reduces discipline problems of toddlers in the car, since they are used to sitting securely fastened in their seat.

All children between birth and age 4 must be properly restrained and transported in an approved child safety seat. Children up to age 8 must ride in a booster seat. When installed and used properly, a safety seat can reduce a child’s chances of being killed or injured in a crash by 71 percent.

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

Chronic, low-level exposure to lead can cause many developmental, behavioral and learning disabilities. Lead is most harmful to children under age six because it is easily absorbed into their growing bodies.

PinnacleHealth's Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) provides comprehensive lead poisoning prevention, testing and control services. Through a contract from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the program serves 35 counties in Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania targetting low-income families and children in areas at high-risk for lead exposure. Through entertaining programs; free lead poisoning screenings; free cleaning kits; home assessments and other activities, the program advances the message, "Be Lead Safe."

Children's Resource Center (Child Abuse Services)

More than 24,000 reports of child abuse and neglect are made in Pennsylvania each year. Even more cases go unreported. Without help, victims are likely to be re-abused, and the abuser is likely to abuse other children. Without intervention, victims have a higher than average chance of becoming abusers later in life, harming their own spouses or children.
